Hi & WELCOME to Savoring Sarah!
My name is Sarah, and I am a 20-something living & working in Traverse City, Michigan. I live in the middle of 200 acres of corn fields with my husband and our 2 dogs, work in public health, and spend most of my free time at home cooking, eating, and/or drinking wine…most often a combo of the three.
Born and raised in Northern Michigan has affected my life in many ways. I know what it is like to wake up to 18 inches of snow, every school and business shut down, winds howling and pots of homemade chili bubbling away on the stove.
I also know what it is like to lay on the soft white sand along the shore of Lake Michigan in late September, the beach long ago cleared of tourists. Where I live, everything is at least a 15 minute drive away, “shopping” consists of lazy Saturday mornings spent meandering the local farmers markets, tasting the fresh picked peaches, inhaling the artisanal soaps, and greeting all the other shoppers with a smile.
Wealth in Northern Michigan is not measured by bank accounts, brand new cars, or designer handbags. Wealth in Northern Michigan is reflected through quality of life: endless trails that wind deep through the woods & up the sand dunes where one can spend hours walking, running, or biking. Farms, fields, vineyards, lakes, small ‘mom & pop’ shops lining the one block that “downtown” consists of. You know your neighbors, and your neighbors know you. Family is the center stone of every day life…because odds are, you live within a short drive of your mom, dad, siblings, in-laws, cousins and friends.
So why a blog about food? Because food is what nourishes us, but not just in the physical sense. Yes, I seek out fresh and local ingredients because I care about the things I am putting in my body, but also because it supports my neighbors- the ones who spend 14 hours a day tending their crops & their herds. Yes, I try to cook healthy and wholesome meals because I care about my physical appearance, but also because I care about the health of my loved ones as well.

Our experiences with food help shape our memories. Some of my longest lasting memories revolve around food. Standing on my tiptoes, peering up at my mom as she folds cherries into dark chocolate batter to make the ONLY cake my dad ever asks for on his birthday; eagerly following my aunts around the kitchen, waiting for the day that I would be put in charge of mincing the garlic for the bruschetta (which, by the way, was probably a more exciting event for me than getting my drivers license).

I simply want to capture and share the memories I am creating at this new stage in my life. It is my hope that it inspires you to find a way to create your own memories with your families.
(and, because cute puppy pictures make everything better…)
